Tuesday letters: District 5 board’s raise is shameful

July 2, 2013

— It didn’t take long after railroading Kim Murphy off the Lexington-Richland 5 school board for the majority to raise its pay by more than 200 percent. How sad. Was this the intent all along?

At least we can thank board member Jim Turner, who voted consistently against his own raise. This majority proved it’s not all about the children; it’s now how much they can pocket in the name of serving the public.

There was a time when “public service” meant just that: service that helped society, at no benefit to one’s self. Now apparently it’s everybody out for himself. They should hang their heads in shame.
