Fort Jackson furloughs will close some gates

bbetts@thestate.comJuly 3, 2013

— Fort Jackson will have reduced gate hours beginning July 8 as nearly all federal civilian workers begin a mandatory furlough period that runs through Sept. 30.

Gate 2: off I-77’s exit 12 at Forest Drive will be the only gate open at all hours throughout the furlough period.

Gate 1: off exit 10 at Fort Jackson Boulevard will be closed weekends and will be open 5 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3:30-6 p.m.

Gate 4: off exit 15 at Percival Road will be closed weekends and open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. throughout the week.

Gate 5: off Leesburg Road will be closed throughout the furlough period.

While Fort officials said they realize the reduced gate hours will impact the community, they said the changes are necessary because of reduced manpower caused by federal spending cuts. Civilian employees who work as security guards will be required to take one furlough day per week during the nearly three-month period.
