BATESBURG-LEESVILLE, SC Charlie Austin Roof, 45, allegedly told Lexington County deputies when they arrived on the 200 block of Decie Road around 3 p.m. Thursday, that he and his roommate and girlfriend, Mary Jane Tucker, 49, had gotten into a verbal fight after a day of drinking alcoholic beverages.

Roof, of Clearstream Valley Road, Lexington, allegedly smelled of alcohol when he was discovered standing over Tucker’s body, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department said. Tucker’s 1999 Dodge Durango SUV was nearby in the middle of the road.

Roof ‘performed poorly’ on a sobriety test conducted at the scene, the Sheriff’s Department said. He refused to take a breathalyzer test at the Lexington County Detention Center leading authorities to have blood drawn by medical personnel at the Lexington Medical Center. The blood will be tested to determine Roof’s blood alcohol level at the time it was drawn.

Witnesses told investigators that Tucker had been visiting a friend on Decie Road and that they saw Roof burn rubber on the dirt road as he was pulling away.

Investigators are still trying to determine how Tucker, who had been riding in the passenger seat of her truck, ended up in the road before being run over, and what the two were arguing about.

Roof was charged with felony driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs that results in death. He was being held at the Lexington County Detention Center on $200K bond.
