Approximate location of last sighting of missing Lugoff boater on the Wateree River about two miles north of US 1.

— A river and air search for a missing Lugoff boater was underway Sunday in the Wateree River area below Lake Wateree by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources.

“The river is at flood stage,” said DNR Capt. Robert McCullough, who said the boater – a 44-year-old man – was last seen around 11 p.m. when he was riding his boat down the river about two miles north of U.S. 1 with a friend.

The boat apparently struck something and capsized, McCullough said.

The friend, a woman he did not identify, surfaced and the man was gone, he said.

The woman floated down the river and managed to find a fisherman, who went and got help, he said.

The search for the missing boater started in earnest Sunday morning once it was daylight.

“We still have hope – we aren’t calling it a recovery yet,” McCullough said.

The boat capsized about two miles north of where the Wateree River crosses under the U.S. 1 bridge near downtown Camden.
