Monday letters: Don’t forget mentally ill in renovations

July 8, 2013

— Regardless of what is built on the State Hospital grounds, I hope that some of the money will go to mental health. I began my career there at William S. Hall Institute as a psychiatric nurse. I used to take my patients on walks around the area. That place has very meaningful memories with those who entered to get help.

Our mental health care needs more funding to help the many who are suffering in these stressful times. I hope that those in charge will remember to honor those who walked on those grounds and lived there when there was no other place to go. Please, let’s do the right thing. Maybe there’s a reason that those grounds have not been restored yet.
