Suspect in shooting of 4-year-old arrested

— One of the suspected gang members accused of engaging in a gun battle Monday that ended in the shooting of a 4-year-old bystander has been arrested, according to the Columbia Police Department.

Marcus Gantt, 21, is charged with attempted murder, unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of a weapon during a violent crime.

Gantt, along with several other unidentified suspects on foot and in a gray Dodge Charger, are accused of shooting at one another outside the 4-year-old girl’s apartment at The Colony complex off West Beltline Boulevard near SC 277 Monday evening.

The 4-year-old was inside the home watching TV at the time of the shootout, and was hit in the upper body by a stray bullet. She was taken to Palmetto Health Richland, where she continues to recover from the shooting.

Police are still investigating who exactly fired the shot that hit the girl.

Gantt, who was identified in surveillance footage as one of the men on foot shooting a gun, was arrested Wednesday afternoon at his home on Lansing Circle. He is a suspected gang member.
