COLUMBIA, SC A Columbia man has been arrested after an overnight police standoff in Greenview that began when the man threatened to kill an officer.

Stephen Green, 32, was charged with disorderly conduct and drunkenness after a standoff with the Columbia Police Department’s SWAT team and crisis negotiators, said Jennifer Timmons, a police department spokeswoman.

Police were called after midnight to a home on Alida Court because a man and a woman were arguing. An officer found the couple in a backyard of another home on Ruth Street, which is on the next block over, Timmons said.

The officer shined his flashlight at Green, who was loudly arguing with the woman. Green allegedly threatened to kill the police officer and said that he was not afraid to go to prison for it, Timmons said. Green shoved the woman into the house and continued to threaten the officer, she said.

The officer called for back up. During the standoff, two residents from a nearby house were evacuated for more than hour, Timmons said.

The woman eventually escaped from the house and told police that Green was intoxicated, Timmons said.

“We waited for him to pass out or go to sleep,” Timmons said. “He did and we went in and got him.”

No shots were fired, and no one was injured, she said.
