Columbia police identify person of interest in girl’s shooting

July 11, 2013

— Police have named a second person of interest in a gang-related gun battle Monday that ended in a 4-year-old being shot in the upper body.

Investigators think that Laquan Lamont Natt, 20, has information on the shootout Monday at The Colony apartment complex off West Beltline Boulevard near S.C. 277. Two groups, one on foot and another in a gray Dodge Charger, fired several shots at one another outside the complex about 8 p.m. that day.

During the shooting, a 4-year-old girl watching TV inside her apartment was hit by a stray bullet and had to be taken to the hospital. The girl remained in critical condition Thursday.

Police have already arrested one man in the child’s shooting. Michael Gantt, 21, is charged with attempted murder, unlawful carrying of a pistol and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. Gantt was identified as a suspect after a man matching his description was spotted on surveillance footage from the shootout.

Anyone with information about Natt’s whereabouts is asked to contact Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC or Natt is considered to be armed and dangerous and is also suspected in an unconnected armed robbery June 18.
