Newberry sheriff warns of contest scam

From staff reportsJuly 12, 2013

— The Newberry County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents of a scam run by people claiming to be with the Publishers Clearing House.

People are getting calls from the number (876) 370-5151 and being told they are a winner.

The “winner” is offered a new car, generally a BMW or a Mercedes, and a large sum of money, the sheriff’s office said. If you want your winnings, you are directed to go to WalMart and get a money order for shipping and handling.

This is not affiliated with the Publishers Clearing House, the sheriff’s office said. It is a scam coming out of Jamaica. Do not send money, the sheriff’s office warns.
