Cloninger joins The State

New USC athletics beat reporter has long history covering Gamecocks

From Staff ReportsJuly 15, 2013

Established Gamecocks writer David Cloninger is joining The State and this week, starting at SEC Football Media Days on Tuesday.

Cloninger will cover all things Gamecocks, with a particular focus on basketball and football. He also will contribute to our coverage of baseball, recruiting and other areas such as facilities improvements.

He joins our team of veteran USC football beat reporter Josh Kendall and Gamecocks baseball writer Neil White, as well as editor Dwayne McLemore.

The State sports section was a Triple Crown winner in the 2012 Associated Press Sports Editors contest, being honored for its Sunday, daily and special sections.

Cloninger, a Rock Hill native and USC graduate, covered South Carolina athletics the past five years for GamecockCentral, a site. Cloninger was the beat writer for men’s and women’s basketball, as well as baseball. He also covered football and helped manage the website.

Cloninger worked at The State from August 2000 to January 2002 before stints at the Florence Morning News, The (Rock Hill) Herald and GamecockCentral.

He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees from USC (2000, 2002) in mass communications and print journalism. He graduated from Northwestern High in 1996.

Cloninger joins The State already entrenched in USC athletics, bringing a historical perspective and an insider view, as well as a knack for breaking news.

You can follow Cloninger on Twitter @DCTheState — where, in addition to the Gamecocks, he will tweet about music, the Atlanta Braves and his pride in Rock Hill.
