Two killed in Lexington County traffic accident identified

— Two people from Batesburg-Leesville were killed Monday night on US 178 near Magellan Road on Monday, the SC Highway Patrol said. A third person in the car was injured.

Killed were the car’s driver, James Dean Burgess, 49, and Wendy Susan Stechman, 44, both from Batesburg-Leesville. A third passenger, a 45-year-old male also from Batesburg-Leesville, was taken to Lexington Medical Center. His condition was not known.

The single-car accident happened at 11:55 p.m. in Batesburg-Leesville.

All three passengers were thrown from the 2001 BMW, Trooper Brent Kelly said; None was wearing a seat belt when the car, which was heading east on US 178, left the road, hit a tree and overturned several times, Kelly said.
