— An armed robbery suspect was shot and killed Thursday night by Richland County Sheriff’s deputies in front of the Fatz Cafe along Broad River Road in Irmo, Sheriff Leon Lott said.

The suspect, who has not been identified, was wanted following the armed robbery of a Broad River Road convenience store around 7 p.m. After a witness called authorities with a description of the truck the suspect was driving, which had been reported stolen Wednesday, four marked and one unmarked Sheriff’s Department cars gave chase.

Lott said after the suspect wrecked the truck in front of the Irmo restaurant and opened fire on deputies from inside the truck. During the gunfight, the suspect was killed, Lott said.

One of the patrol cars was hit four times by gunfire, Lott said. A bullet apparently ricocheted off a deputy’s boot but the officer was not injured, he said. Officers found 14 shell casings inside the truck cab after the gun battle, Lott said.
