Two more people face charges in Saint Bernard puppy theft

Columbia - The StateJuly 19, 2013

— Two more people have been arrested in connection with the theft of a Saint Bernard puppy from an animal adoption center July 8.

Malcolm Joshua Dickerson, 21, of Asel Street, Columbia, and Rebecca Michelle Howell, 19, of Sycamore Tree Road, Lexington, both turned themselves in Sunday at the Lexington County law enforcement complex on an arrest warrant charge of petit larceny, Sheriff James Mettts announced Monday. Both were released after posting bail.

A third person, Kandis Lynn Dease, 20, of Emanuel Church Road, Lexington, previously turned herself in to authorities July 20 on a charge of petit larceny in connection with the puppy theft, Metts said. Dease was released from the county detention center July 21 after posting bail.

Arrest warrants allege that at about 5:44 p.m. July 8 Howell, who was accompanied by Dease and Dickerson, took possession of the white-and-brown Saint Bernard puppy while at the Pets, Inc. animal adoption center at 300 Orchard Drive and left the animal adoption center without making arrangements to adopt the puppy and pay the fee, Metts said. Witness statements and surveillance video substantiated that Howell stole the puppy from the animal adoption center, Metts added.

Last week, three beauty school students were arrested in a separate theft at Pets Inc. following the theft of a beagle-mix puppy from the same adoption center July 9. That puppy’s name was Liberty.
