CITY OF COLUMBIA

— Columbia’s Parks and Recreation Department, along with the Coca-Cola Co. and Piggly Wiggly will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon Wednesday to celebrate the newly refurbished basketball courts at St. Anna’s Park.

St. Anna’s Park, at 1313 Liberty Hill Ave., in the city’s Lyon Street neighborhood, was recently awarded a $15,000 grant through the national Sprite Spark Parks Project initiative. The initiative is powered by a partnership between the National Recreation and Park Agency and Coca-Cola, and through the efforts of Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. The initiative’s mission is to improve communities by providing support for play spaces and giving young people safe, fun places to come together in a positive, active way.

Renovations at the park include new asphalt surfaces on courts, newly installed basketball goals, restriping of half court and full court lines and re-grading and repositioning the full court in order to accommodate a future walking trail at the park. The city also used federal Community Block Development Grants to add new playground equipment, benches, a water fountain, fencing and trees. Additional park improvements are scheduled for later this year.
