Guard at juvenile justice facility charged with assaulting detainee

July 25, 2013

— A detainee being housed at the Department of Juvenile Justice Richland County facility suffered a compound leg fracture Monday, July 22, in an attack by a guard, the SC Law Enforcement Division said Thursday.

The guard, Edward Bing, III, 32, was charged Thursday with assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. Bing joined the Department of Juvenile Justice in February 2013, DJJ spokeswoman Loretta Neal said.

No other details of the incident were released. The Department of Juvenile Justice is not permitted to release the age of detainees, Neal said.

The incident remains under investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division.

Bing was being held at the Alvin S Glenn Detention Center Thursday afternoon.
