Mykell Lerch

— A 21-year-old West Columbia man has been arrested for allegedly strangling his roommate.

Mykell Anthony Lerch is being held in the Lexington County Detention Center on a murder charge, said Capt. Seth Zeigler of the West Columbia Police Department. A bond has not been set.

Lerch is accused of strangling 32-year-old Mark Alexander Zeigler at their home on the 1100 block of Seminole Drive. The victim is not related to the police captain.

Police went to the home around 7 a.m. Thursday after neighbor’s called 911 to report an fight at the home, Zeigler said. Police have not determined why the men were fighting.

When police arrived, Lerch was standing outside the home covered in blood, according to the arrest warrant. Lerch also had a bite mark on his right arm and scratches on his forearm that would consistent with the victim trying to pull Lerch’s arm from around his neck, the warrant said.

An autopsy confirmed that Mark Zeigler had been strangled and no weapons were used, the police captain said.

Mark Zeigler was married, but his wife was at work when the fight occurred.

The investigation is ongoing.
