LEXINGTON COUNTY, SC — Three of four West Columbia City Council members face re-election challengers, with the largest field seeking a vacant post.
The nonpartisan matches will be settled Nov. 6.
Mayor Joe Owens takes the interest as eagerness to join a winning team instead of dissatisfaction.
“I don’t think anybody has a complaint with city hall,” he said.
The matches took shape after filing ended Friday (with incumbents noted by asterisks):
• District 1 – Dale Harley* and Steve Martin.
District 3 – Casey Jordan Hallman* and Tim Corey.
• District 4 – Luane Brickhouse, Bobby George, Marsha Moore and Ann Thornley.
• District 5 – Boyd Jones*.
• District 7 – Tommy Parler* and Preston Cantrell.
Moore and Cantrell are former council members.
The winners will each serve four years, except in District 4, where the victor will serve two years replacing the late Abby Bray. Council members are paid $10,159 a year.
West Columbia is the first of 10 Lexington County communities in which the field of candidates is set for municipal elections this fall. Overall, seven mayoral and 27 council posts are at stake.
Matches in other communities will be known later this month.
Filing ends Aug. 22 in Lexington and Aug 30 in Batesburg-Leesville, Chapin, Irmo, Pelion, Pine Ridge, Springdale, Summit and Swansea.
