Note to the new University of South Carolina students moving in this weekend: This weather isn’t typical for August in Famously Hot Columbia.
The National Weather Service forecast for the Midlands calls for highs in the lower 80s, maybe even the upper 70s, and two to three inches of rain in the next five days.
Students and their parents might curse the rain, but the temperature will be much more comfortable for toting gear into dorms than it has been in past years.
Ask the upperclassmen, especially the ones from up North. They can tell you about their tough first few days on campus when temperatures and humidity were in the 90s, and they sweated more walking to and from their dorm rooms than during their workouts at the Strom. (That’s the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center, but you’ll get used to people calling buildings by first names quickly.)
