Event planned Saturday to benefit Kelly Hunnewell’s children

— A benefit for Kelly Hunnewell’s four children is planned for Saturday.

Hunnewell, a single mother, was gunned down July 1 while working alone in a commercial bakery off Beltline Boulevard. Money raised will help with expenses in caring for her children.

The event will be from 2-10 p.m. at The Original Ale House at 12 Tommy Circle. There will be food for sale, an auction, games and live music. Donations to the Hunnewell children may be brought to the bar during the fundraiser, and checks should be written to Hunnewell Children’s Fund.

Hunnewell was shot to death around 3 a.m. July 1 in an attempted robbery. She had just opened the commercial kitchen, which was used as an off-site bakery for Carolina Cafe. The bakery is next door to the Ale House.

Police said the robbers had planned to rob the bar but it was closed. Hunnewell had left a door propped open to ease the heat in the bakery.

Also Saturday, a rally for justice in Hunnewell’s memory will be held from 9 a.m. to noon at the State House. A march begins at 9 a.m. at Carolina Cafe on the corner of Pendleton and Sumter streets.

Both events will be held rain or shine.
