There’s something about the calendar date Aug. 16 in Columbia that attracts drenching rains, and Friday was the wettest Aug. 16 ever.

As of 8 p.m., 4.32 inches had fallend at Columbia Metropolitan Airport, breaking the daily record of 3.77 set in 1949. Rain continued to fall, leaving a chance to break the all-time August record of 5.03 inches set on Aug. 18, 1965.

Aug. 16 now is the date of three of the 15 rainiest days ever in Columbia in August, including 3.59 inches on that date in 1971.
