Tests under way in Lexington-Richland 5 after mold found

School officials are checking all 22 schools and several dozen buses that transport students for mold after small amounts were found in a few classrooms and buses.

The step comes after mold was found at CrossRoads Middle School and Irmo High School and in a handful of buses, officials said Thursday.

All but one of nine classrooms at Crossroads are clean while one at Irmo awaits completion, officials said. The affected rooms are closed to use.

Heavy rain this summer “created the perfect environment” for mold, school spokesman Mark Bounds said.

Moisture problems were discovered at four other schools but no mold has been found, he said. For now, those rooms also are off-limits.
