Two charged after July armed robbery at Mid-Carolina Steel

August 23, 2013

— Two men were charged this week in connection with the armed robbery of two employees of Mid-Carolina Steel on July 1st. A third suspect is still being sought, Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott said in a news release.

Todd Anthony Cofield Jr., 21, was taken into custody Tuesday on Devine Street in Columbia. He was charged with two counts of attempted murder and armed robbery. Carlton Gregory, 20, was arrested on July 10 at the home of a relative in West Columbia and charged this week with armed robbery.

Cofield and an unknown suspect are accused to brandishing a gun and demanding money from two women returning from a trip to the bank to the Mid-Carolina Steel office and fabrication facility at 7425 Fairfield Road. After taking the money, shots were fired at the two victims (neither was hit) as the suspects fled to a getaway car.

Gregory allegedly helped the suspects get rid of their getaway car, a silver Mercedes.

Lott said additional arrests are expected.

Anyone with any information about the July 1 crime is asked to call Crime Stoppers at (888) CRIME-SC (274-6372).
