August 26, 2013

— A 25-year-old Sumter man has been arrested and charged in connection with a fatal hit and run collision that occurred last night.

Tyrone Willie Dennis turned himself into law enforcement early Monday and was charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death.

The incident occurred around 9:20 p.m. on Broad Street between Milton Road and Carolina Avenue. Isabelle Shannon, 54, of Sumter was struck by a vehicle the suspect allegedly was driving as she stood by her disabled vehicle in the roadway. Police allege Dennis’ vehicle also struck Shannon’s vehicle and another vehicle that had stopped to assist Shannon.

Police say the suspect got out of his vehicle and fled the scene.

Shannon died at the scene from her injuries.

Officers investigating the incident identified Dennis as the suspect and obtained an arrest warrant. Dennis turned himself in to law enforcement at 5 a.m. Monday.

Dennis is being held at the Sumter Lee Regional Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing.
