Man killed in moped wreck was intentionally struck

August 27, 2013

CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) – Authorities say a man is charged with murder after he struck a 67-year-old moped driver from behind in Bethune and then stole the vehicle.

Kershaw County deputies said Alan Robinson was hit Saturday by a 1999 Tahoe.

Investigators say before he died, Robinson told them he heard a vehicle behind him accelerate just before he was hit. Deputies say Robinson then saw a man load his moped into the back of the SUV that hit him.

Authorities say Robinson died from massive internal injuries after undergoing surgery.

Deputies say 32-year-old Willie Starnes told them he wanted to steal the moped so he could sell it to buy crack cocaine.

Starnes was charged with murder. He remains in jail and it wasn't known if he had a lawyer.
