Mark Hubbard carded his second straight 6- under 65 on Saturday to take a 1-stroke lead after 54 holes of the Wildfire Invitational.
Hubbard, who is winless on the PGA Tour Canada, finished three rounds at 15- under-par 198.
Mackenzie Hughes remained in second place as he posted a 3-under 68 to end three rounds at minus-14. David Skinns (66), Cory Renfrew (68), Nick Taylor (67), Kyle Stough (69) and Hugo Leon (72) share third place at 13-under 200 at Wildfire Golf Club. Leon was the leader after each of the first two rounds, and he won last week's event.
Hubbard started his round with a birdie on the second. He traded a bogey for a birdie for the fifth. He picked up another birdie at the par-5 eighth before he parred the ninth to make the turn at 11-under.
The 24-year-old American, who has finished 12th and 10th in his last two tour starts, poured in three birdies in a 4-hole span from the 11th to jump to minus-14. Hubbard parred three in a row from the 15th, then birdied the par-5 closing hole to grab the lead by himself.
Hubbard overcame illness earlier in the week to take the lead.
"I got food poisoning on Wednesday afternoon and threw up pretty much from about 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday until about noon on Thursday," Hubbard admitted. "I threw up at the turn in my first round, and I've putted really well since and that's pretty much been it."
Hughes had three birdies on the front nine. On the inward nine, he birdied the 16th, but tripped to a bogey at the last to end one back at minus-14.
NOTES: Hubbard had four top-10 finishes last year, including a share of sixth at The Players Cup, but his tie for 10th last week was his first top-10 this season ... Yohann Benson matched Hubbard for the low round of the day, and that helped Benson soar from a share of 48th into a tie for 13th.
