Sunday letters: GOP driving us to tea party

I’m 82 years old and have been a Republican since Sen. Strom Thurmond set us on that path. It then seemed to be the party of conservatism with personal freedom as its goal.

Now the GOP appears headed in the direction of big government just as the Democratic Party.

Republicans are so weak that little can be accomplished except to close down government. When we try to get anything done, we have to compromise, and that has seemed to be a losing proposition because we are a fractured party.

While the Republicans are fighting among themselves, the Democrats are getting their racial, immigrant, liberal and graveyard coalitions together and voting as one.

Is the Democratic leadership stronger than the Republicans? Where have all our leaders gone, longtime passing? Where have all our freedoms gone, longtime passing? When will we ever learn? To tea party or not to tea party? I guess that I have no choice. Rather than me leaving the Republican Party, the Republican Party has left me.
