Coroner IDs man killed in collision with Columbia dump truck

— The man killed in Monday’s collision between a pickup truck and a city of Columbia trash truck was identified Wednesday as Sidney Smith, 74.

Smith, of 704 Wilmette Road, Columbia, was the driver and lone occupant of a 2001 Chevrolet pickup truck when he suffered an aneurism. lost consciousness and veered into the path of the oncoming city trash truck, which was en route to a landfill.

Watts said an autopsy showed that Smith died from “trauma associated with the crash.”

The collision happened around 3 p.m. in the 6300 block of Two Notch Road near Raymond Street.

The driver of the city 2009 Ford trash truck, Ernest Harley, 47, a 12-year employee with the city’s solid waste division, was treated and released at Palmetto Health Richland hospital.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
