ROCK HILL — A York Technical College student spent the night in jail after police say he showed up to class drunk with a bottle of whisky in hand on Tuesday.
At about 3:50 p.m., police were sent to the college after receiving complaints about an intoxicated student, according to a Rock Hill police report. Several security officers directed police to Austin James Gross, 18, of Chester County, who police said “appeared sluggish in his responses,” slurred his words and had bloodshot eyes.
While stepping within four feet of Gross, the officer could smell alcohol, the report states. Security personnel showed police a nearly-empty bottle that Gross admitted belonged to him. Police opened the bottle and could smell liquor.
Several classmates complained to security officers about Gross, who bragged about drinking Crown Royal while in several different classes, the report states. Police arrested him and charged with him with public disorderly intoxication and possession of liquor while under 21.
He was released from jail Wednesday morning on a personal recognizance bond.
