— A school bus crash near Lugoff-Elgin High School on Thursday afternoon sent eight to the hospital.

Chris Spitzer, batallion chief with the Lugoff Fire Department, said the crash involved three vehicles, including the Wateree Elementary School bus. He said five children from the bus and three adults from the passenger vehicles were transported by EMS to local hospitals. The children’s injuries were non-life-threatening.

Spitzer said the crash was under investigation by S.C. Highway Patrol, S.C. Department of Transportation and several other agencies.

A detour on U.S. 1 lasted for about two hours but was removed shortly before 5:30 p.m.

Mary Anne Byrd, communications director for the Kershaw County School District, said said the bus typically carries about 50 children and was at the beginning of its route.
