— The Columbia owner of several pit bulls was shot Monday when he tried to prevent three men from stealing a pit bull in his back yard.

The injuries are non-life threatening, a city police spokeswoman said.

After shooting the pit bull's owner, the suspects fled on foot.

The shooting took place in the 400 block of Oakbrook Village Road, which is off Percival Road.

"We are investigating," said Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons.
