This week's all-Midlands football games

Dreher (3-0) vs. Brookland-Cayce (4-0)

Site: Memorial Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Given the schedule, Dreher’s 3-0 start is not a surprise. The same cannot be said for the Bearcats. Friday’s game should be a telling one for both teams as region play approaches … Dreher breezed past Eau Claire last week behind the play of sophomore quarterback Avery Armstrong who passed for 158 yards and threw four touchdown passes. WR Bradford Lemmons caught five passes for 101 yards and two TDs. To date, Armstrong is 40-for-65 for 381 yards and six touchdowns with just one interception. He also has 248 yards rushing, is averaging 7.8 yards per carry and scored two TDs. Lemmons has 18 catches for 176 yards and four scores. RB Donovan Ward is the other prime offensive producer with 233 yards rushing and five TDs. Last week’s defensive star was Josh Scott, who picked off two EC aerials … Brookland-Cayce scored its most impressive win yet last week, thumping Chapin 35-14. The Bearcats unique shotgun double-wing attack produced 358 yards, 302 coming by land. Fullback Ti Myers was the workhorse with 96 yards on 23 carries. Wingback A.J. Brown flashed for 133 yards on 16 carries. QB Zeke Walker ran for two touchdowns and threw for two scores and also played every down on defense.

Series history: Dreher has won two in a row but the Bearcats still enjoy a 10-7 series lead in the modern era.

Spring Valley (3-0) vs. Westwood (1-2)

Site: Harry Parone Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes:Spring Valley kept rolling last week, racing past Lexington, 42-15. The Vikings produced 502 offensive yards. Chris Adams had his best overall game of the season. The senior quarterback ran for 94 yards and two touchdowns and was 5-for-6 passing for 107 yards. Johnson Miller had another big game, running for 155 yards and two TDs on 15 carries. Jordan Williams chipped in two scoring runs. On defense, Williams had 16 total tackles and Christian Miller rang up 10 tackles, 2 TFL, 2 sacks, 1 PBU and blocked an extra point kick … Westwood led Blythewood 10-0 at halftime last week, but ultimately fell 24-17 to the neighboring Bengals. The Redhawks, however, had a good defensive showing behind Bradley Carter (9 solo tackles, 4 TFL, 2 sacks), Jeremy Jenkins (13 tackles) and Antonio Maxwell (8 solo tackles, 1 forced fumble, 1 blocked punt return touchdown). Westwood limited Blythewood to a meager 142 total offensive yards. Still, it wasn’t enough. The defense will have as bigger test this week against a team that is averaging 46.3 points and more than 375 yards per game.

Series history: Spring Valley was a 43-7 winner in the first meeting of the district rivals last season.

Lexington (2-1) vs. Irmo (0-3)

Site: WildCat Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes:Irmo dropped a tough 38-27 at Greenwood against the defending 4A Division II champion Eagles. The Yellow Jackets were on the verge of scoring to take a two score lead in the second half, only to see a fumble at the Greenwood 1-yard line alter the equation. The Eagles recovered the loose ball in the end zone and scored 14 unanswered points to put it away. The Jackets, who are off to a 0-3 start for the third years in a row, are looking to avoid their first 0-4 start since 1961. QB Demetrius Lewis is 36-for-83 passing for 500 yards and three touchdowns. RB Shyheim Copeland has 314 yards rushing and three TDs on 40 carries. WR De’ares Nelson has 15 catches for 206 yards and one TD. Khari Stone-Marshall leads the way on defense with 28 tackles … QB Will Hunter )44-73-4-509-3), RB Slade Carroll (47-182-2) and WR Keelo Norris (15-130-1) are the Lexington offensive headliners. Grayson Chumley is the top hit man on defense with 32 tackles.

Series history: Lexington has managed only 10 wins in the 45 “Battle of the Dam” games since 1970. Irmo had padded its 34-10-1 series lead with a run of 12 wins in the last 13 meetings.

Swansea (2-1) vs. Batesburg-Leesville (1-2)

Site: Doug Bennett Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Swansea is coming off a bye week and a lost to Chapin. To date, QB Clay Lucas is 33-for-44 passing for 401 yards and six touchdowns. RB Travis Loadholt has 262 yards rushing, a 7.7 yard-per-carry average and four TDs. WR Nick Hopkins has 12 catches for 162 yards and two scores. On defense, Chris Brunswick has a team-high 29 tackles … Batesburg-Leesville suffered a 35-28 loss to tough Strom Thurmond last week. No additional information on the game was provided by the school.

Series history: Swansea snapped an four-game series losing streak against the Panthers with a 27-7 success last year. B-L leads the series, 13-8.

Columbia (1-3) vs. A.C. Flora (0-3)

Site: Memorial Stadium. Time: Thursday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Columbia’s offensive woes continued last week in a 49-6 loss to 3A top-ranked Daniel. The Capitals have tallied a paltry 41 points in four games. QB William Gossett is the clear offensive leader with 135 yards rushing and 252 yards passing. Louis Wilson is the defensive leader with 43 tackles … A.C. Flora, on the other hand, is averaging 26.7 points per game but is still looking for its first win under new coach Reggie Shaw. The Falcons are coming off a bye week in the wake of tough losses to Gilbert and Bluffton. QB Brendan Greene is 18-for-29 passing for 398 yards and five touchdowns. RB Aven Pollard had 418 rushing yards and two TDs on 39 carries. WR Denzel Johnson had 14 receptions for 418 yards and two scores.

Series history: Flora was a 48-20 winner a year ago, but Columbia still has a commanding 19-10 series advantage in the modern era.

Lower Richland (2-2) vs. Airport (1-2)

Site: LR Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Lower Richland evened its slate with a 14-6 win at Richland Northeast. De’Andre Smith had 158 yards rushing for the Diamond Hornets. QB Heath Gilmore had one scoring run and one scoring pass … Airport is coming off a bye week. QB Kadarius Jackson is 20-for-47 passing for 227 yards and one touchdown and has 237 yards rushing on 49 carries. RB Corey Bradley has 146 rushing yards and two TDs on the books. K Brady Nelson is 6-for-6 in PATs and 4-for-5 in field goals. Defensive standouts include Rodney Smith (27 tackles, 9 TFL), Zach Feaster (29 tackles, 2 TFL) and Javon Smith (21 tackles, 5 TFL).

Series history: Airport’s four-game winning streak against the Diamond Hornets has allowed the Eagles to take a 10-7 series lead.

Camden (2-1) vs. Lugoff-Elgin (0-3)

Site: Zemp Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes:Camden is coming off a bye week and a blowout loss to defending 3A state champion Hartsville. The Bulldog offensive leaders include RB Kendrice Slater: (41-255-1), WR Alexx Cooke (11-104-3) and QB Denzel Martin (21-47-2 179-4). Nelson Semple (31 tackles), Tyrel Smith (29), Omar Mingo (25) and Delton Bradford (20 tackles, 9 TFL) are the top hit men on defense … Lugoff-Elgin fell again last week, 31-14 to West Florence. As a result, the Demons’ losing streak hit 20 games. L-E is one of three teams currently caught on a losing streak of 20 or more games. Whitmire’s slump is at 38 games with Clover at 22. QB Shon Belton did all he could to stop the slide last week. The selfless senior ran for 110 yards and two touchdowns and had 98 yards passing. The defense, however, continued to struggle. L-E is allowing an average of 41.3 points per game.

Series history: Camden’s wild, 46-35, triumph last season was its 26th in 33 tries against the neighboring, archrival Demons.

Pelion (2-2) vs. Gilbert (2-1)

Site: Pelion Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Pelion balanced the books with a 40-20 win against C.A. Johnson last week. QB Zach Hawkins had 149 yards rushing, two touchdowns and two conversion runs. Ervin Green backed Hawkins with 90 yards rushing on 13 carries. The Panthers are averaging 286 yards rushing per game. Green is the team leader with 350 yards on 55 totes. Octavious Green is the team tackles leader with 23 stops … Gilbert is coming off a bye week. Mitch Spires has been outstanding to date for the Tribe. He is 40-for-73 passing for 542 yards and three touchdowns and has 245 yards and seven TDs by land. RB Jakayus Leaphart leads the team with 305 yards rushing. WR Raymond Padgett (13-249-2) has emerged as Spires’ primary target. Garnett Cason and Gabe McNatt share the team tackle lead with 34 apiece.

Series history: Gilbert’s run of six wins in seven meetings since 2007 has upped the Indians series lead to 26-9. Gilbert is the only team Pelion has faced every season since the Panthers varsity football debut in 1980.

C.A. Johnson (1-3) vs. Ben Lippen (0-3)

Site: Bolden Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: Mike Knox has been a do-it-all players for C.A. Johnson. On offense, the senior is 41-for-74 passing for 776 yards and six touchdowns and has 303 yards rushing on 42 carries. On defense, he leads the Green Hornets with 25 tackles. He also averaged 37 yards per punt … Ben Lippen dropped a 34-7 decision last week to Heathwood Hall.

Series history: Ben Lippen is 3-0 against the Green Hornets, including last season’s 43-24 conquest.
