— A 3-year-old Lancaster boy has been hospitalized in Charlotte after authorities say he nearly hanged himself while at a daycare Wednesday afternoon.

Police do not suspect foul play, but are still investigating the accident at The Burbee Place daycare when the boy apparently tied one end of a jump rope to a slide on the playground, said Capt. Scott Grant with the Lancaster Police Department.

“Somehow,” the rope wound up around his neck, Grant said. As he went down the slide, the rope tightened and he began to choke, police say.

A staff member went to the boy’s aid, but it is unclear if she saw the incident as it was happening or afterwards, Grant said.

Paramedics took the boy to Springs Memorial Hospital and later to Levine Children’s Hospital for observation, he said.

The state Department of Social Services, which is responsible for licensing child care facilities in the state, is also investigating, said spokeswoman Marilyn Matheus.

Comments about the incident have been deferred to Burbee Place’s owner, who was not immediately available Thursday morning.

The facility is open.
