— A Gaston woman riding in a vehicle northeast of Columbia early Sunday morning died after she was shot in the head, officials said.

The victim was identified as Amanda F. McKemie, 22, Richland County coroner Gary Watts said in a news release.

McKemie was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by an as-yet-identified man, Columbia Police Department spokeswoman Officer Jennifer Timmons said in a statement released Sunday.

The two were traveling on West Campanella Drive shortly after 1 a.m. Sunday, in an area between I-20 and U.S. 277 near Farrow Road. The driver told investigators he heard gunfire and saw that his passenger had been critically injured, Timmons said.

He called 911 and the woman was taken to an area hospital by emergency medical services where she was pronounced dead by medical staff Sunday afternoon.

Police officials were continuing an investigation into the death..
