Newberry Co. 9-year-old killed when bike hits tractor-trailer

— A 9-year-old Whitmire boy on his bicycle died after hitting a tractor trailer in Newberry County.

The child was identified as Bennett Dalton, Newberry County coroner Craig Newton said Tuesday.

The incident happened just after 6:30 p.m. Monday, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. The boy was riding his bike out of a driveway when he was hit at Church and Odell streets. The boy’s bicycle struck the side the westbound 18-wheeler, the Highway Patrol reported. He was not wearing a bike helmet.

The boy was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland, where he died from his injuries just after 9 p.m., Newton said.

Whitmire is a small town east of I-26 in the middle of the Sumter National Forest.

The Highway Patrol, Whitmire City Police, Newberry County Sheriff’s Department and the Newberry Coroner’s Office are investigating.
