Kool & the Gang to headline Columbia’s New Year’s Eve street party

September 24, 2013

Kool & the Gang has a New Year’s Eve date with Columbia.

The acclaimed funk R&B band, whose hit “Celebration” is a natural party song, will play that and more as it headlines this year’s Famously Hot New Year’s Eve in downtown Columbia.

The free street party, now in its third year, will be Tuesday, Dec. 31, along Main between Gervais and Lady streets.

Kool & the Gang have nine Top 10 hits, 31 gold and platinum albums, and have performned non-stop for 35 years. The band has a new holiday album members will play for the crowd.

Fireworks flanking the State House at midnight, food and other fun for the family also are on the agenda for the city’s bash, which has proven successful from its first year out.

The Wallflowers headlined last year’s event, drawing between 24,000 and 26,000 partygoers at the foot of the State House. In 2011, the crowd was about 20,000, when George Clinton was the main act.

Also performing Dec. 31 is blues-hop and soul singer ZZ Ward, and Columbia’s Weaving the Fate.

Admission is free, although VIP packages will be available. Tickets will be on sale Wednesday at http://www.famouslyhotnewyear.com.

The announcement was made Tuesday evening at the Capital Center.
