Fire department trains for trench rescue at former landfill

The Columbia Fire Department is training this week on how to rescue people stuck in trenches.

The training is taking place at the former City of Columbia landfill off Shop Road.

The fire department responds if a trench collapses during roadwork or construction, said Mike Denicola, an officer for Columbia Rescue One.

The landfill makes a good site for the department’s annual training because the property is city-owned so they can dig, Denicola said.
