— An employee of the Berkley County Detention Center in Moncks Corner has been charged with assaulting an inmate following an investigation by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.

Thomas Justin Mims, 28, was charged with one count of assault and battery, third degree, after an incident during the early morning hours of Sept. 19, according to a SLED release reported Thursday

Around 4:55 a.m., in an attack captured on video, the suspect shoved, pushed, and punched Anthony Ray Williams in an attack that “appeared unnecessary and excessive,” the arrest warrant charges.

The Berkley County Sheriff’s Department requested the SLED investigation. If convicted, Mims could be fined up to $500, sentenced to 30 days in jail, or both.
