VOTER VOICES

Voter voices: Columbians weigh in

September 27, 2013

Courtney Lewis

Columbia voters will elect a mayor and three council members Nov. 5. We asked voters what they see as the key issues in the city.

University of South Carolina Southern studies and economics professor Courtney Lewis is looking for a mayor who is good with a budget and has strategic planning skills to help grow the city.

“We are making a name for Columbia and the university is expanding as well,” said the 39-year-old who lives in the Old Woodlands community. But she said it’s not just the economy but also issues related to education and health that are drawing her to the voting booth this time around.

“The people are the heart of the economy so if they are educated and well taken care of, we can only go up from here.”

John Long, USC School of Journalism
