— A West Columbia man charged with felony DUI in December’s death of a state Department of Transportation worker is set for trial Thursday at the Lexington County Judicial Center.

Thomas Lee Stafford is charged with felony DUI and leaving the scene of an accident involving death, a S.C. Highway Patrol spokesman said Monday.

Stafford is accused of hitting and killing Nicholas Johnson, 21, a highway maintenance worker for the S.C. Department of Transportation. At the time of his death, Johnson was part of a road crew clearing debris from I-20 near the Richland-Lexington county line. He was struck around 1:20 p.m., according to case records.

Stafford had two earlier DUI charges, according to State Law Enforcement Division and Lexington County Sheriff’s Department records.
