October 2, 2013

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) – Authorities are investigating the deaths of a woman and a child found dead in their beds in a Summerville home as homicides.

Berkeley County Coroner Bill Salisbury identified the victims Wednesday as 26-year-old Ashley Kaney and 8-year-old Riley Burdick.

Salisbury said Riley died from asphyxiation by strangulation. Her death has been ruled a homicide.

Results of the autopsy on Kaney is pending toxicology and microscopic test.

Salisbury says a social worker from Sangaree Intermediate School went to the home Tuesday morning after the girl had missed two days of school. When no one answered the door, she called the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office.

Neighbors say the woman and girl had lived in the home for about a year.
