GEORGETOWN, SC — The facades of the buildings left standing on Front Street following last week’s fire were taken down by a contractor Thursday while hundreds of people watched and fundraising efforts for the victims continued.
On Thursday, Georgetown County spokeswoman Jackie Broach said more than $50,000 has already been raised to help those who lost homes and jobs when seven buildings were destroyed by a fire Sept. 25 on the 700 block of Front Street.
The American Red Cross said eight or nine families lost their home in the fire, while 130 people were put out of work.
On Thursday, Georgetown Administrator said the investigation into the cause of the blaze is ongoing. Officials believe the fire started at Limpin’ Janes.
An online donating site, http://georgetownfirerelief.com, was created last week in addition to the Front Street Fire Relief Fund at any First Citizens Bank in South Carolina or the Front Street Fire Fund at First Federal/SCBT.
