Newberry County warns of water line scam

cwinston@thestate.comOctober 7, 2013

Newberry County residents who get a letter that looks like a bill for water line insurance or warranty should not respond, according to the Newberry County Sheriff's Department.

According to a Monday press release, the bill is an "official-looking document" that says the customer does not have coverage of the water line. It also says a leak would result in charges that could cost thousands of dollars to repair.

The sheriff's department said it is not offered by the government or service company. It is offered by an outside company and should be considered with caution. It is "deceptive" at best, authorities say.
