Tuesday letters: Make bonding rules tougher

October 8, 2013

— If someone is accused of committing a crime while out on reduced bail, both the bond poster and the bonded suspect should become liable for the full amount of the original bond. Bonds should be secured by real assets and designated a primary claim so that the mortgage holder has a say about using this asset to facilitate the release. The court then becomes second only to the bond holder in seizing the asset.

And let’s call it “Kelly’s Bond,” as in Kelly Hunnewell. When the existing system fails, we the people have to do something.
