RICHLAND COUNTY, SC — A man out jogging on a two-lane road died early Saturday after a chain of deadly events set in motion by the protruding mirror of a passing vehicle, Richland County coroner Gary Watts said Sunday.
“The outside mirror of one vehicle ... knocked him into the path of another vehicle traveling in the opposite direction,” Watts said.
Watts identified the man as Darius Brown, 20, of Hartsville.
“The victim was visiting family in town when he went out for a jog,” Watts said.
An autopsy Sunday showed he died of injuries received in the collision, which happened shortly before 9 p.m., Watts said.
Brown was transported to Palmetto Richland, where he died early Saturday morning, Watts said.
Watts said the man’s injuries made it difficult to tell whether the mirror dealt the fatal blow, or the jogger’s death was caused by being struck by the second car. The accident happened off Farrow Road about two miles east of I-77.
S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating.
Watts said people jogging or walking should move facing traffic and wear reflective clothing. People on foot should also be aware that objects can stick out from passing vehicles, he said.
“You need to watch it — because you never know,” Watts said.
