Game notes: Spring Valley steamrolled Blythewood 49-20 in last weeks region opener for its first-ever triumph against the district rival Bengals. The Vikings amassed 509 yards on offense with 498 coming by land. John Miller scooted for 143 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries. Fullback Alec Keen had his best game to date with 193 yards on 27 carries. Chris Adams passed for 65 yards and two TDs and had 92 yards rushing and one scoring run. Millers season totals are up to 1,115 yards rushing, 126 points. Josh Harlan (110 tackles), Christian Miller (77 tackles, 13 sacks), Donovan Palmer (76 tackles) and Jordan Williams (69 tackles) are the Viking defensive headliners ... Irmo opened region play with a 16-14 road win against Ridge View. It was the third win in a row for the improving Yellow Jackets. RB Shyheim Copeland had 137 yards rushing and two touchdowns on 15 carries. QB Demetrius Lewis was 11-for-22 passing for 162 yards and added 39 yards rushing. WR Manny Banks caught five passes for 84 yards. Linebacker Marquis Taylor had a big game with 12 tackles, four TFL and one sack. Up front Andrew Boyton had 10 tackles, two TFL and one fumble recovery. DBs Will Jamison and Rodrick Ladson helped the cause with one interception each.
Series history: Spring Valley snapped a five-game losing streak against the Jackets with a win last year, cutting Irmos series lead to 21-20.
Ridge View (2-5, 0-1 Region 4-4A) vs. Lugoff-Elgin (1-6, 1-0)
Site: Blythewood District 2 Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: This is a key game. The loser will all but be eliminated from finishing in the top three and earning an automatic state playoff berth Lugoff-Elgins 23-game losing streak came to an end with last weeks 31-10 win over Richland Northeast. Not surprisingly, senior quarterback Shon Belton was the Demons star only this time the spotlight was shining in a win. Belton ran for 175 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries and was 8-for-13 passing for 92 yards and two TDs. Emmonti Payne scored two touchdowns one by land, one by air. Kicker Andrew Place booted three PATs and one field goal. Malek Lyles (7 tackles, 1 interception) and Illichris Gordon (7 tackles, 1 sack) were the defensive standouts Ridge View suffered a bitter 16-14 loss to Irmo in the first round of region play despite a solid defensive effort. Josh Hill (7 tackles, 5 TF, 3 sacks) and Chris Redmond (9 tackles, 2 TFL, 1 sack) were the headliners. Offensively, Walter Napper had 86 yards rushing and one touchdown on 23 carries and caught two passes for 31 yards.
Series history: A 40-28 win last season upped Ridge Views series lead to 3-1.
Richland NE (0-7, 0-1 Region 4-4A) vs. Blythewood (4-3, 0-1)
Site: Harry Parone Stadium. Time: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Game notes: Blythewood took a 49-20 hit in its region opener against Spring Valley. Sophomore David Israel was 14-for-31 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns, but the Bengals could not keep pace with SVs potent triple option attack. In the end, Blythewoods defense allowed 509 yards overall, 498 on the ground. WR Lynard Jamison hauled in six passes for 137 yards and one TD. The senior has 44 catches for 689 yards and also leads the team in rushing yards (278) and scoring (84 points) Richland NE may have seen its last chance at a win go by the boards last week in a 31-10 loss to Lugoff-Elgin which entered the game mired in a 23-game losing streak. Its the same old story for the Cavaliers, who managed only 228 yards on offense. QB Simeon Kelly had 100 yards passing and one scoring throw to B.J. Dickerson. It was Dickersons fourth TD reception of the season. Kelly leads the team in total offense (817 yards) and scoring (30 points).
Series history: Blythewood has won six of the seven meetings, including a tight 21-20 decision last year.
