Thursday letters: Bogus disability claims have become prevalent

October 17, 2013

I watched with interest a recent edition of “60 Minutes” that included a segment with Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., discussing fraud in the Social Security Disability Insurance program.

It referred to some applicants receiving lifetime benefits for “mood disorders,” thanks to the help of unscrupulous lawyers and complicit physicians. I wonder what today’s unemployment rate would be if these bogus claims were denied.
