Thursday letters: Legalize marijuana for medical use

October 17, 2013

— Agnes F. Pomata’s Sept. 20 letter (“Make medicinal marijuana legal”) was most welcomed. Passing a law to allow medicinal, prescribed use of marijuana is absolutely needed in South Carolina. Twenty states have done this.

I suffer from peripheral neuropathy and take strong pain-killing medications. A side effect of this is severe nausea. So there is really little time without discomfort and pain in my life. I recently sold my commercial real estate company that I started in 1977. Having to retire was a very difficult decision for me, but a necessary one due to my health situation.

I strongly urge our state Legislature and the governor to research and follow other states’ allowance of regulated, medical, prescribed use of marijuana to help with so many of our citizens’ pain.
