The S.C. State Fair has launched a free ticket promotion for the final day of the fair Sunday in support of the Five Points merchants.

Anyone who presents a receipt for $25 or more from a Five Points establishment will receive two free admission tickets (a $20 value) for the fair for Sunday. Receipts must be dated between Friday and Sunday and contain a special “Find Your Happy” sticker provided by the merchants.

The promotion comes in the wake of recent violence in the popular commercial district. Last weekend, a USC freshman was shot and paralyzed, an innocent bystander hit by a stray bullet.

Fair officials said after attending Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin’s special community meeting Wednesday, they brainstormed on ways to make a significant positive impact for the Five Points community.

“The State Fair is a strong part of our community,” said State Fair general manager Gary Goodman. “As a community partner we understand the urgent need to support Five Points at this challenging time. We believe the neighborhood is not the problem; hoodlums, gangs and troublemakers are the problem.”
