NEWBERRY COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPT.

— Christopher Walter David, 43, of Columbia Avenue in Chapin was arrested Thursday by Newberry County deputies after a chase on foot into a wooded area of Newberry County.

David was being sought after the Wednesday morning strong armed robbery of a 73-year-old man who was pumping gas at a Pomaria gas station, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Department said in a release.

Following a tip, a deputy spotted David on Lazy Brook Road in Chapin and tried to arrest him. David fled into nearby woods however. He was found hiding in thick underbrush about a mile away after dogs, a helicopter and members of the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, Chapin Police and SLED joined in the search.

David faces charges including strong armed robbery and assault and battery on a police officer while resisting arrest. The officer was not harmed during the incident, the sheriff’s department said.
