LEXINGTON COUNTY Lexington-Richland 5 Superintendent Stephen Hefner underwent successful heart bypass surgery on Friday morning.

His prognosis for a speedy recovery is “excellent” according to a release from the school district. Hefner was resting comfortably on Friday afternoon in the ICU and expected to be moved to a regular hospital room at Providence Hospital over the weekend.

The surgery followed a heart catheterization that revealed evidence of blockages.

Hefner has been the superintendent of Lexington-Richland 5 for nearly three years. Prior, he served as superintendent of Richland School District Two for 16 years.

In lieu of flowers, Hefner said he would prefer donations be made to the D5 Foundation for Educational Excellence in his name (http://www.district5foundation.org/).

Lexington-Richland 5 board chairman Robert Gantt said: ''We're thrilled that Dr. Hefner’s surgery went well. He is an unbelievable educator, leader and friend. We are concerned first and foremost about his health, but we can't wait until he's back leading the district where he belongs.''
